A report on 6th ILNU National Students’ Conference on “International Humanitarian Law and Refugee Law”

Centre for International Humanitarian Law Studies and human rights of the Institute of Law, Nirma University has organized the fifth edition of its annual flagship event – ILNU National Students’ Conference on “International Humanitarian Law and Refugee Law” on March 16th, 2017 at the Institute. The Conference has been conducted in association with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

The Conference was illuminated with the presence of eminent personalities such as Mr. Narinder Singh, Former Chairperson, International Law Commission, United Nations, Dr. Sunod M. Jacob, Regional Delegation for South Asia, ICRC, Ms. Teena Joseph, Asst. Refugee Status Determination (RSD) Officer, UNHCR, Dr. Anuradha M. Chenoy, Professor, Centre for Russian and Central Asian Studies, School of International Studies, JNU who also shared their insights on the various issues that were discussed in the conference.

Chief Guest Mr. Narinder Singh, Former Chairperson, International Law Commission, United Nations spoke on the role of global peacekeeping institutions and also the crisis which
Dr. Sunod M. Jacob, Regional Delegation for South Asia, ICRC, talked about the role of ICRC IN dissemination of information pertaining to International Humanitarian Law and the AID that ICRC provides to the conflict ridden countries.

Ms. Teena Joseph, Asst. Refugee Status Determination (RSD) Officer, UNHCR shared her experience of working with refugees on Libyan boarders with the participants.

Summing up the session, Dr. Anuradha M. Chenoy, Professor, Centre for Russian and Central Asian Studies, School of International Studies, JNU addressed the audience and highlighted the need of proper research. She also spoke on improvement in areas of research methodology, inspiring students to contest more often.

Winners from each session of the conference were awarded the best paper award. Their research papers will be published in the edited volume having ISBN No. The Guests congratulated the participants and praised the Institute for organizing such intellectually opulent seminar.
